World Suicide Prevention Day 2023

World Suicide Prevention Day 2023

On the 10th September #WorldSuicidePreventionDay iscreating hope through action’. The World Health Organisation (WHO) say that by creating hope through action, we can signal to people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts that there is hope, that we care, and want to support them.

According to the latest data released from the 2021 Census, we know that people with disabilities are much more likely to die by suicide than non-Disabled people.

Fazilet Hadi, Head of Policy at Disability Rights UK said: “The disproportionately high suicide rate amongst Disabled people is truly shocking. It is more evidence that Disabled people are the hardest hit by cuts in public services, reducing incomes and rising costs. We face inadequate health and social care services, punitive benefit processes, low levels of benefits and wages and the huge impact of the cost of living crisis. Energy, food, housing and care  costs are spiralling out of control, leaving us cold, hungry, in debt and feeling abandoned.”

With this information, Ealing Mencap recognises that it is time to create hope through action, by raising awareness, reducing stigma or providing advice and support; everyone can play a part in suicide prevention. Our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling.

We stand with you on World Suicide Prevention Day.

On the 12th October, Ealing Mencap will be co-delivering  Ealing’s second Suicide Prevention and Self-harm Workshop in conjunction with Ealing Council, NHS North West London, Cape and others. The workshop hopes to put into action; support, awareness and prevention for those in Ealing who are experiencing suicidal thoughts.
