Ealing Mencap’s Travel Buddy Project gives adults with disabilities the support they need to travel safely, and more independently, on public transport. This support often helps them to access many day services, employment, education and social opportunities that they would otherwise not be able to get to.
The support is provided by our Travel Buddies:
What is a Travel Buddy?
The project trains and employs Travel Buddies all of whom have a learning disability. Our Buddies are independent travellers and are fully trained in how to meet the needs of each individual they support.
What do they do?
A Travel Buddy’s job is to help and support other people with learning disabilities, who cannot travel on their own, to travel more independently. The Travel Buddy helps them by meeting them and supporting them to travel to where they need to go. This might be on a train, on a bus or by walking. The Travel Buddy helps them to keep safe, not to get lost, and helps them if anything goes wrong on the way.
Who can have a Travel Buddy?
To be eligible for a Travel Buddy you must:
- Have a learning disability.
- Travel a regular and consistent journey.
- Need someone to help you travel on public transport.
- Live in the borough of Ealing.
Why is it a good idea?
The Buddy Project gives both the Travel Buddy and the person they are buddying a sense of empowerment. By travelling on public transport with their peers people with learning disabilities become much more confident and independent in other areas of their lives. It also helps to improve general attitudes towards people with learning disabilities as they are visible and seen actively taking part in the community.
What does it cost?
A Travel Buddy placement normally costs you nothing! We are funded to train our Buddies and set them up in placements. If the Buddy arrangement is working well then we apply for funding to continue the placement!
