Over the last few months 6th Form pupils at Cardinal Wiseman School have been taking part in the First Give Programme. This scheme encourages young people to identify social issues in their area and engage with a charity that addresses them. The students then use their talents, time and tenacity to work with the charity to help make a difference to the community through fundraising.

Ealing Mencap was fortunate to be one of the charities chosen by a group of students and Eva, Patryk and Leo organised a fantastic Quiz Night raising a much needed £150 as well as awareness of our charity.

As part of the programme, all of the pupils involved gave presentations about their chosen charities to their class. Eva, Patryk and Leo won their class competition and so were invited to take part in the Year Group Final, where the winning team would be awarded £1000 to give to their charity.

The Year Group Final took place on Wednesday 13th December 2017. Everyone held their nerves brilliantly – not easy in front of an audience of peers, teachers and a judging panel included the Mayor of Ealing - Councillor Simon Woodroofe and The Chair of Hanwell Town Football Club – Bob Fisher.

Listening to all of the young people’s presentations was inspiring. It was clear just how much time, energy and passion all of the young people had given in support of their charities and how deserving all of their causes were. It was a pleasure to attend the final – not least when Eva, Patryk and Leo were announced as the worthy winners!

Once the cheering had subsided there was time for a quick couple of photos of our winning team being presented with their cheque.

Eve, Patryk, Leo - thank you so much for picking Ealing Mencap as your charity and for being so brilliant ! You were a delight to work with and we would be more than happy to work with you again. This has been a really positive experience for us and would encourage all schools and charities to engage in the First Give programme if you have the chance.
